Aluminum giant deploying Verticalnet solution to gain visibility into global spend data
Malvern, PA — November 8, 2004 — Aluminum giant Alcan Inc. has expanded its relationship with solution provider Verticalnet to include tools to help the company create a single global source for spend analysis.
Headquartered in Montreal, Alcan is a major player in the aluminum, packaging and aluminum recycling markets, reporting revenues of $13.6 billion in its 2003 fiscal year. The company employs 88,000 people and has operating facilities in 63 countries.
Alcan had previously purchased Verticalnet's Advanced Sourcing solution for transportation in North America and Europe. Now company is set use the Verticalnet Spend Manager Module for spend analysis, too.
Verticalnet said that the Spend Manager implementation will leverage Alcan's existing technology investments, extracting transactional data from Alcan's numerous enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and using Verticalnet's data cleansing, classification and enrichment capabilities to create a single global source for spend analysis.
Alcan believes that the Verticalnet solution will allow its staff members to spend more of their time identifying savings and strategically selecting suppliers, and the company is looking to achieve significant savings from its spend analysis implementation through increased purchasing leverage across business units, supplier consolidation and reduced sourcing cycle times.
"After a thorough search of the market, we selected Verticalnet because of the ability of their solution to work with our existing systems, the depth of their supply management experience and their ability to get us up and running quickly," said Mark Jetley, Alcan's director of global procurement data services.
Jetley added that, after working with Verticalnet on previous projects, Alcan was impressed by Verticalnet's supply management domain knowledge and its return on investment potential. "Their solution should enable us to see payback on our investment in six months or less," he said.
"Global organizations like Alcan have a tremendous amount of purchasing data in their existing ERP systems, but require a solution that repeatably and automatically classifies spend data, quickly identifies savings opportunities and measures contract compliance," said Brent Habig Verticalnet's executive vice president of sales and consulting. "Implementing the Verticalnet Spend Manager solution will enable Alcan to drive additional value from their previous investments in ERP technology."
