
Artificial intelligence is changing the way supply chains operate, but it's also changing what organizations need from their workforce. For many leaders, the instinct has been to focus on hiring AI talent. The reality is that hiring alone won't solve the challenges that lie ahead.
According to Gartner, demand for supply chain roles requiring AI skills has increased 387% between the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2026, far outpacing growth across the broader labor market. At the same time, AI-related supply chain roles are becoming increasingly concentrated at the mid- and senior levels, creating intense competition for a limited pool of experienced professionals.
Those numbers tell an important story, but perhaps not the one many organizations assume.
The conversation around AI talent often centers on recruitment, yet the bigger opportunity lies within the workforce companies already have. Professionals who understand how freight moves, supplier relationships function, disruptions unfold, and operational decisions are made possess years of institutional knowledge that cannot be replicated overnight. The challenge isn't replacing that expertise, but instead to give those professionals the skills and confidence to work alongside increasingly intelligent technologies.
New technology can quickly expose differences in organizational readiness. Some teams embrace new capabilities and immediately begin identifying practical ways to improve operations. Others hesitate, not because they question the value of AI, but because they haven't been given the training or support needed to understand where it fits into their day-to-day responsibilities. The key to successful technology adoption is about preparing people to use them effectively.
An essential part of this is messaging from leadership, and engagement with colleagues throughout the organization from junior level to team leaders. This messaging must both convey the capabilities of the advancement of the use of AI and how it will supplement their own skillset, as well as a sense of continued job security so they don’t feel threatened that it will supplant them. After all, who wants to lead the charge to implement processes and technology which makes their own position obsolete or redundant.
That distinction matters because AI is fundamentally different from many previous technology investments. Warehouse management systems, transportation management platforms, and visibility tools largely automated existing processes. AI is beginning to influence how decisions themselves are made. It can identify patterns, prioritize exceptions, summarize information, and generate recommendations in seconds. Those capabilities are powerful, but they still depend on experienced professionals who understand the broader operational context.
AI can be incorporated into daily tasks and should be encouraged for employees to lean into using. It’s that “light-bulb” moment when a team member realizes how quickly and efficiently they can perform certain tasks and what that will mean for their overall productivity. And that, instead of AI being a threat to their job, it will actually make them even more valuable to the organization. This realization immediately elicits a positive response, engagement and questions, and helps others in the meeting to embrace the new reality of how the workforce is changing.
In marine logistics and global supply chains, there are countless situations where judgment matters as much as data. A disruption may involve weather conditions, port congestion, customs requirements, contractual obligations, or customer priorities, often all at once. AI can rapidly organize information and surface potential solutions, but determining the best course of action still requires operational experience. Technology should strengthen human decision-making, not replace it.
That's why organizations shouldn't consider AI literacy a technical skill reserved for solely data scientists or IT teams. It is becoming a core business competency across supply chain operations. Employees don't need to build AI models themselves, but do need to understand how to interpret AI-generated recommendations, recognize when outputs require additional scrutiny, and know when operational expertise should override automated suggestions.
This shift also changes how organizations should think about talent development. Competing for a small pool of experienced AI professionals is becoming more expensive and increasingly difficult. Gartner's research suggests that organizations willing to invest in internal upskilling and better leverage entry-level talent will be better positioned to build sustainable AI capabilities over time.
That approach also acknowledges an important reality. Supply chain expertise develops over years of experience navigating disruptions, building relationships, and understanding how complex operations function under pressure. Those skills remain incredibly valuable. Rather than replacing experienced professionals with AI specialists, organizations should focus on helping experienced professionals become more confident and capable users of AI.
The organizations making the greatest progress aren't necessarily the ones investing the most in technology. They're creating environments where employees feel comfortable learning, experimenting, and asking questions. They recognize that successful transformation depends as much on culture and leadership as it does on software.
Upskilling also sends an important message to employees. Instead of viewing AI as something overwhelming, or a threat to their role, organizations can position it as an asset that enhances their ability to solve problems, make better decisions, and focus on higher-value work. That shift in mindset often becomes just as important as the technology itself.
AI will continue reshaping supply chains for years to come. New tools will emerge, capabilities will expand, and expectations around speed and efficiency will continue to grow. But organizations shouldn't lose sight of what ultimately determines whether those investments succeed.
Technology can transform processes, but people transform organizations.
The companies that realize the greatest value from AI won't simply be those that hire the most AI talent. They'll be the ones that invest in the people who already understand their operations, equipping them with the skills needed to lead the next generation of supply chain decision-making.
