Food company, looking to develop dry network within 60 days, turns to 3PL for warehousing, transportation services

Chicago, Illinois — December 3, 2004 — Food and agribusiness corporation J.R. Simplot Company has tapped third-party logistics (3PL) specialist DSC Logistics to provide supply chain solutions that include warehousing and transportation management services.

Privately held Simplot, with more than $3 billion in annual revenues, is one of the world's largest frozen-potato processors, annually turning out 3 billion pounds of French fries and other potato products worldwide. The company, headquartered in Boise, Idaho, employs 13,000 people and operates 23 food processing plants in North America, Australia and China.

Under the terms of the agreement, DSC is managing full warehousing and transportation services out of its Joliet, McDonough, Roanoke and Allentown logistics centers, supporting Simplot's dry foodservice network. This includes providing Simplot with a multi-vendor consolidation program and full transportation management services, and supplying dual-customized lot control and quality processes for both Simplot-produced product and co-packed product.

"Simplot's challenge was to develop a dry network within 60 days, and DSC was able to execute and deliver a comprehensive logistics solution that exceeded all of their needs," said Ann Drake, CEO of DSC Logistics.

Drake said that Simplot does not typically award multiple operations to a single provider, but the agribusiness elected to award DSC four distribution centers (DCs) out of five in its dry network because of the 3PL's standardized process-oriented operations, IT infrastructure, carrier partnerships and report card processes, warehouse operations and competitive consolidation rates.

DSC offers services that include supply chain analysis and design, strategic solutions-based consulting, business process integration, process improvement and management of logistics operations, such as warehousing, transportation, packaging and fulfillment.
