FedEx locked in an order of Tesla's all-electric big rig trucks. The shipping provider ordered 20 vehicles and will go into service in its FedEx Freight department.

Late last year, UPS reserved 125 of the same trucks shortly after its unveiling. FedEx's initial reservation is part of the company's efforts to reduce its impact on the environment. However, it is possible that it could match its competitor's reservation.

Tesla currently has a lot of cumulative orders for its semi, but it only represents a small pilot relative to the size of the business of the companies placing orders. Tesla started running actual hauls with its pre-production vehicles for its own use and is targeting a 2019 production date for the all-electric trucks.
