GE Supply offers online ordering using bar-coded paper catalog

Shelton, CT June 20, 2001 In what it claims to be an industry first, GE Supply today announced that its newly released product catalog offers fast, automatic, error-free bar-coded ordering.

The 1,128-page catalog features more than 25,000 "fastest-moving" products offered through GE Supply, the electrical, voice and data products distribution business of GE, and all item descriptions include manufacturer part number, GE Supply item number and bar code.

Utilizing a small, key fob-size bar code-laser scanner from Symbol Technologies, users can log on to gesupply.com (manually or by scanning the catalog cover bar code) and scan individual product bar codes of items being ordered into their "shopping cart." Users enter the quantities desired, and the order is placed and automatically scheduled for shipment to the customer or for pick-up at a local GE Supply branch.

The portable bar code scanner connects to a personal computer. According to GE Supply Product Catalog Manager Lou-Anne Annino, the scanners can be purchased from GE Supply at nominal cost. "The bar code catalog is designed to show customers the broad range of products available from GE Supply," she says. "Its use allows them to easily find the desired products, either scanning them into the shopping cart on the Web or calling GE Supply to place an order."

Annino added that companies do not have to be a gesupply.com registered user to take advantage of the new catalog's bar code feature. "Any customer can log on the site and charge their purchase via credit card," she explained.
