Tempe, AZ December 13, 2002 Design collaboration specialist CoCreate Software this week rolled out the latest version of its collaborative product development application, adding features targeting customers in the automotive and aerospace industries.
CoCreate produces computer-aided design (CAD) and collaboration software to help companies design products, share ideas and manage data. New features in version 11.61 of the provider's OneSpace Solution Suite are intended to make the solution more attractive to auto and aerospace industry companies.
Specifically, the latest iteration of the solution has added a CATIA v.5 adapter and expanded UNIX support. Files from CATIA, a 3D CAD package popular among automotive and aerospace vendors, can now be read into OneSpace Collaboration meetings. In addition, OneSpace products are now supported on the AIX 4.3.3 and Solaris 8 and 9 operating systems, with continuing support on HP-UX 11 and the major Windows platforms.
Existing features in the solution include online meetings, which allow product design team members meet over the Internet to share designs and ideas without requiring CAD expertise. Throughout the online meeting, users can capture notes and assign responsibility and action items, and at the end of the meeting, participants can generate a report summarizing the meeting.
Interoperability features in the solution allow design data from a variety of sources, including CAD formats used in automotive and aerospace, to be brought into a meeting for review, inspection and modification. Markup features allow screen shots to be captured and marked up to communicate ideas without impacting the model.
Ken Versprille, a senior analyst at D.H. Brown Associates, points to this interoperability as a key feature that could benefit auto industry manufacturers. "The industry has applied considerable effort to unify standards, but with no real success so far," Versprille said. "CoCreate takes a unique approach with their solution, which avoids translation all together."
Some automotive suppliers, such as TRW Automotive and Venture Industries, already use CoCreate solutions to communicate with OEMs, vendors and among themselves, and the solution provider is counting on this latest version to make the solution more attractive for companies in these industries.
