The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance announced that enforcement officials will give carriers a break on “out of service” orders for electronic logging device (ELD) violations until April 1, 2018. Any carrier that violates the ELD mandate will be labeled as “out of service.”

Commercial drivers are required to keep track of their hours of service and record of duty status via paper logs if they don’t have ELDs. Those who are using a paper log will only receive a citation until April 1 and not be placed out of service.

According to FMCSA, carriers without ELDs after the implementation date won’t receive any points against their CSA scores until April 1, 2018. However, they will be cited and possibly fined for the offense.
