Tobacco manufacturer deploys Vordel to secure and manage its data center XML traffic in global services-oriented architecture

London — July 17, 2006 — British American Tobacco (BAT) today said it has deployed XML Web Services security company Vordel's services-oriented architecture (SOA) security and management technology to protect and manage its XML traffic throughout a global network of data centers.

British American Tobacco is the world's second largest quoted tobacco group by global market share, with brands sold in 180 markets. The company has more than 300 brands in its portfolio.

Following a thorough review of offerings in the marketplace, Vordel was selected as the solution capable of meeting BAT's requirements to protect its enterprise SOA infrastructure. Using Vordel, BAT can remotely manage its SOA deployment on a global level.

Key decision factors for selecting Vordel included the firm's demonstrable acceleration of XML security primitives, the product's scalability and easy to use centralized policy management control.

Forrester analyst, Randy Heffner, vice president Application Development & Infrastructure, stated in the Strategic SOA Platform Vision, Security is most critical for external integration scenarios, but its value is often underestimated in internal integration. More so than many other aspects of your SOA platform, complete security requires an integrated solution across multiple types of products and solutions.

Gavin Targonski, technical architect for Application Technology Strategy at BAT commented, "With Vordel, BAT has been able to deploy a global SOA security infrastructure that aligns with both our business and technology strategies. The solution is standards based and fully conformant to company best practice for SOA security operations."

Targonski added, "Vordel's products provide BAT with the essential security and management framework to take advantage of Web Services technologies."
