Big Blue selects Synapsis' environmental solution to support compliance initiatives for all IBM products

Spring House, PA — June 13, 2005 — IBM is set to use an environmental compliance and product lifecycle management (PLM) solution from Synapsis Technology to support IBM's environmental compliance requirements for all its product lines.

IBM's Integrated Supply Chain Group, responsible for procurement and vendor management, manufacturing and distribution, will be integrating Synapsis Environmental Material Aggregation and Reporting System (EMARS) into the company's extensive systems environment to support the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives as, well as its own internal compliance specifications.

New environmental regulations, such as RoHS and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE), require manufacturers to comply with industry standards in order to sell their products in certain countries. Synapsis said that EMARS provides the stability, functionality and necessary flexibility to manage IBM's components at a commodity level and handle the complexity of its brand structure.

EMARS is an off-the-shelf solution that offers functionality to analyze and track compliance at the substance, material, part and product level and manage the data collection and reporting process. "EMARS maximizes the visibility of compliance information to all stages of the product lifecycle and therefore minimizes the risk and cost associated with non-compliance," Synapsis said in announcing the deal.

"EMARS provides IBM with a sophisticated compliance and reporting tool that can be implemented quickly to meet the regulations and lays a foundation for future requirements," said Lonnie Gillihan, president of Synapsis.

Synapsis is a software and consulting company specializing in providing environmental compliance, product lifecycle management (PLM) and product data management (PDM) solutions. Founded in 1999, Synapsis is headquartered in Spring House, Pa. and has a software development center in Noida, India.
