Distribution center aims to make delivery network more accessible to pharmaceutical, medical device, equipment companies
Louisville, KY — October 6, 2005 — UPS has opened its largest logistics facility dedicated to serving the healthcare industry, a 500,000-square-foot distribution center located near the company's Worldport global air hub.
Thanks to the location, air shipment orders received as late as 11 p.m. can arrive at their destination the next day, while packages shipped via UPS's ground network can reach 70 percent of the United States in two days or less, UPS said.
"With this facility, we have added another healthcare distribution center that can help our clients meet the many operational and regulatory challenges they face," said Rocky Romanella, president and general manager of UPS Supply Chain Solutions' Americas region, speaking at the official dedication ceremony here. "This facility will allow us to manage pharmaceutical and medical devices and equipment in a secure and approved environment."
The new facility, located next to the main campus of the UPS Supply Chain Solutions Technology and Logistics Center, is the 25th in North America to be devoted to the healthcare industry and was constructed to comply with the U.S. Federal Prescription Drug Marketing Act and various other federal and state regulatory requirements, according to UPS. It is divided into validated temperature-controlled and ambient sections and is designed to handle sensitive pharmaceuticals. The building's equipment and systems facilitate the efficient distribution of over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
Additionally, other medical-related products and equipment distributed from the facility can be delivered to mass market retailers, pharmacies, healthcare facilities and direct to consumers.
UPS said that the new building is the latest addition to its growing network of facilities for managing the global supply chain requirements of healthcare customers. UPS Supply Chain Solutions services include transportation management, logistics, distribution, inventory management, order fulfillment, returns management, customs brokerage and international trade services.
