X-ray security innovators expect to facilitate speed, accuracy in change process with new solution

Owings Mills, MD — October 19, 2004 — American Science and Engineering Inc., a company that develops and manufactures X-ray inspection systems for homeland security and other defense applications (AS&E), said it has chosen Avatech Solutions Inc.'s SMARTEAM software as its enterprise product lifecycle management (PLM) solution and Avatech as its system integrator.

The solution was chosen to integrate with AS&E's corporate engineering applications and Oracle enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, and it will be used throughout the company by over 100 engineering, purchasing and manufacturing users in its Billerica, Mass., plant. The company said it expects to use the software to better manage changes as they affect vendors and product lines, thus helping to make AS&E more cost competitive and bring new designs to market faster.

"After fully researching the market and having had a previous good experience with Avatech, we are confident in their expertise and abilities as our PLM partner," said Ken Breur, vice president of Operations. "We believe that the SMARTEAM solution will streamline changes at AS&E, making us more lean and responsive. In the security industry today, partnering with suppliers and working as a team is essential in getting to market faster with new innovations. SMARTEAM will help with this collaboration."

AS&E X-ray inspection systems are used by governments and corporations around the world to combat terrorism, drug and weapons smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud. AS&E's detection technologies can uncover dangerous and elusive threats, including explosives, plastic and metal weapons, and radioactive devices, such as dirty bombs and nuclear weapons of mass destruction (WMD). The X-ray systems are deployed worldwide at ports and borders, and military and high-threat facilities.

Avatech said its PLM solutions are designed to help companies create and manage their product-related intellectual capital, from the product's initial conception through its retirement. The solution integrates diverse "Silos of Information" to improve collaboration internally and across geographic boundaries.

Avatech markets its products to a variety of industries including, machine design, aerospace, automotive, consumer products, discrete manufacturing, electronics, heavy industry and medical.
