CSX Corporation has changed how it calculates train velocity, terminal dwell and cars online, key metrics for which the railroad has recently taken criticism.
CSX's new calculation of train velocity will include time for crew changes, freight car pick-up and other activities that were previously excluded. Terminal dwell calculations have similarly changed to include dwell times during various work activities. The definition of cars online was changed to exclude inactive freight rail cars that were out for repairs, in storage, had been sold or dwelled at customer locations for more than a day.
President and CEO Hunter Harrison said the changes would make the metrics more accurate.
