Palm oil is a $6 billion industry. Its substances are used in nearly 50 percent of all consumer goods.
Companies that use palm oil have often been linked to deforestation, animal and human rights abuse. Unilever’s chief supply chain officer Mark Engel is sharing locations for more than 1,400 mills and 300 direct suppliers of the oil. The announcement is in hopes to spark a world-wide movement of companies becoming more transparent.
“This is a big step towards greater transparency, but we know there is more work to be done to achieve a truly sustainable palm oil industry and we will continue our efforts to make this a reality,” Engel said in a statement.
