Barcode printing specialist sets up division to help suppliers meet radio frequency ID compliance mandates

Charlotte, NC — October 15, 2004 — Barcode printing specialist SATO America has set up a separate business unit dedicated to helping customers understand and implement mandated radio frequency identification (RFID) systems.

SATO says it recently introduced the industry's first, complete multi-protocol electronic product code (EPC)-compliant RFID solutions for customer pilots and beta tests, fully supporting the Uniform Code Council's (UCC) EPC initiatives, including projects driven by Wal-Mart, the Department of Defense (DOD) and other major retailers.

Now the provider has set up an RFID Business Unit to assist suppliers to Wal-Mart and other retail companies in meeting impending RFID mandates in North America. Jan Svoboda has been appointed to lead the RFID Business Unit. Svoboda has been involved in RFID technology as SATO America's former RFID product manager.

The new business unit will report directly to Robert Linse, vice president of sales and marketing at SATO. Victor Barczyk, vice president for business development at SATO International, is spearheading the worldwide effort.

"SATO America's new RFID Business Unit will enable Jan and his RFID team to better serve our customers' recent RFID market demands and demonstrates our total commitment to help develop and implement the appropriate RFID solutions," said Barczyk.

SATO said it now delivers not just RFID printing solutions but complete EPC-compliant RFID solutions, including pre-planning consultation, onsite survey, pilot planning and implementation, and post-pilot consultation and customer service.

Headquartered in Singapore, SATO is a publicly listed company in Japan and has worldwide offices in the United States, Europe and around Asia. The company reported 2002 revenues of $445 million.
