Analytics solution intended to provide enterprise view of manufacturing process to help boost quality and yield for manufacturers

Las Vegas — October 13, 2003 — Business intelligence and analytics specialist SAS has released a new solution designed to provide an enterprise view of the manufacturing process with the goal of boosting quality and yield for manufacturers.

SAS says that its Process Intelligence solution accesses and integrates equipment, product and process data from manufacturing execution systems (MES), enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and other sources, across multiple plants and geographies.

The solution identifies relationships and correlations among manufacturing processes and operations that could contribute to special cause variations, and this insight allows organizations to proactively implement strategies and tactics that simultaneously speed time-to-yield and problem resolution, according to SAS.

The new offering includes query and reporting tools that provide a "rear-view mirror" for historical insight into manufacturing operations. In addition, the analytics in the solution are intended to help customers make the proper forward-looking decisions to optimize quality, scrap and other manufacturing-related performance.

The Process Intelligence solution includes the following five elements:

  • An Information Store is intended to provide a unified view of process, product and equipment data. An integrated data environment manages relevant data associated with the manufacturing process. This real-time view was designed to replace disparate spreadsheets and proprietary tools that carry their own assumptions and criteria.

  • The Navigator provides an interface that serves as the intermediary between end-users and the Information Store, brokering queries and responses. By eliminating their need to manipulate data, SAS says that customers can instead focus on retrieving information to address business needs.

  • The Discoverer is a Web-accessible interface that allows regional or global organizations to analyze historical data. It provides methods to identify and quantify root causes of production problems to reveal deeper understandings so that corrective monitoring, control and improvement actions can be taken, according to SAS.

  • The Agent operates as an early-warning system by scanning time-based data with the goal of identifying potential issues before they affect quality. The Agent publishes alerts that can be shared with other plants and colleagues who may face the same issues.

  • A Collaborative Space provides a forum in which organizations can share lessons learned. Analyses and reports generated by the Agent and Discoverer modules are published to this repository, allowing best practices to be shared throughout the organization.

The goal of the solution, SAS says, is to enable manufacturing and engineering process owners and managers to monitor performance, uncover key issues, perform investigational discovery and collaborate within and between teams to promote learning. The potential payoffs could come in the form of accelerated time-to-yield, problem resolution and time-to-market, reduced costs and waste, and improved process, product and service quality.

The initial targets for this solution include companies in the semiconductor, high-technology and life sciences industries, SAS said.
