
Transportation data has never been more available. Shippers, carriers, logistics providers and warehouse operators can now collaborate using far more detailed operational information than they could a decade ago.
Yet many facilities still face the same familiar problems: late arrivals, crowded yards, missed dock windows, detention, rework and too much time spent on phone calls and manual updates. The issue is not always a lack of data. More often, it is that transportation data stops short of the operational decisions it should support.
For transportation data to reduce delays and inefficiency, it has to connect with what happens at the dock and in the yard. That is where plans meet reality. A carrier’s ETA, a missed appointment or a delayed inbound load only becomes useful information if it helps teams adjust the next step: which door to use, which trailer to move, which labor plan to change and which stakeholders need an update.
The facility is where transportation data becomes operational
Transportation data is often viewed through the lens of shipment visibility. That is understandable. Knowing where freight is and when it will arrive is essential. But arrival data alone does not resolve the operational consequences of a changing plan.
If an inbound truck is running late, the impact can spread quickly. The planned dock door may no longer be available. The result can be labor staged for the wrong window, trailers moved out of sequence, receiving or loading priorities changed, outbound commitments adjusted and customer expectations reset.
In a well-connected operation, transportation data helps coordinate those decisions. In a disconnected one, the same update creates a chain of manual work: checking the appointment schedule, calling the carrier, updating a spreadsheet, informing the dock team and reconciling the change in another system.
That is how transportation data loses much of its value. It identifies the problem, but the response remains manual.
Manual work is still absorbing too much volatility
C3 Solutions’ 2026 State of Dock & Yard Management survey found that inefficient manual processes are now the top operational challenge in yard and dock operations, selected by 40.3% of respondents, up from 35.9% in 2025. During peak periods, 51% of respondents said they rely on overtime and 50.3% use temporary labor, while only 34.2% turn to technology.
Those numbers point to a common pattern across the industry. When volatility increases, many facilities still respond by adding labor, extending hours and leaning on experienced people to coordinate around problems. That approach can keep freight moving in the short term, but it is costly and difficult to scale.
Transportation disruption is rarely isolated. A late truck affects dock availability, a missing product changes receiving priorities and a supplier delay ripples into outbound planning. If the facility relies on people to manually translate each transportation event into yard and dock action, every disruption creates unnecessary coordination work.
The question for supply chain leaders is not simply whether they have transportation data. It is whether that data reduces the amount of human effort required to respond.
Visibility needs to connect to execution
Real-time visibility remains important. In the same C3 survey, real-time yard visibility was the most valued feature in dock and yard management, selected by 59.1% of respondents. Visibility gives teams a clearer view of trailers, appointments, dock activity and exceptions.
But visibility is not the finish line. The stronger signal in the data is the growing emphasis on integration. Integration with existing systems rose to 43%, while scalability and customization climbed to 23.5%, nearly double the level reported in 2025. Buyers already know they need to see what is happening. They are increasingly focused on whether that visibility fits into the rest of the operating model.
That matters because the dock and yard often sit between several systems. Transportation uses a TMS, the warehouse works from a WMS, finance and procurement rely on ERP data, and the gate draws on appointment tools, carrier messages and local checks. When those systems do not share enough context, transportation data becomes another input that must be interpreted and rekeyed.
Connected execution closes that gap by turning appointment data into dock plans, arrival updates into yard moves and trailer status into a shared operational view. Exceptions then flow across the operation without repeated manual intervention.
The goal is not to automate every decision. Dock and yard operations still require judgment, especially when sites are constrained, volumes shift and local conditions matter. The goal is to remove the repetitive handoffs that slow the response and make execution dependent on tribal knowledge.
Better data should reduce delay, not just document it
Transportation data is often used to explain what happened after the fact. It can show that a carrier arrived late, a driver waited too long, or a trailer spent too much time in the yard. That reporting has value, but the greater opportunity is using the same data to prevent avoidable delay while the operation is still in motion.
For example, when appointment patterns reveal that certain inbound flows consistently miss their windows, dock schedules can be adjusted before the problem becomes daily firefighting. Arrival data that highlights recurring dwell time on a specific carrier or lane allows operations and transportation teams to address the root cause together. Connecting yard status with dock planning also reduces the time spent searching for equipment or waiting for trailers to be positioned.
This is where transportation data becomes more than a visibility asset. It becomes an execution asset. It helps teams make better decisions earlier, with fewer calls, fewer manual updates and less rework.
What supply chain leaders should evaluate next
As companies evaluate transportation data strategies, they should look beyond data collection and ask how that data changes the work at the facility level. Leaders should assess whether transportation data reduces detention and dwell time, improves appointment adherence, limits manual carrier communication, gives warehouse and transportation teams a shared view of the plan, and makes exceptions easier to manage during the shift rather than simply report afterward.
These questions matter because the dock and yard are increasingly important control points in the supply chain. They influence carrier relationships, labor productivity, service performance and operating cost. They also affect driver experience and sustainability outcomes, especially when long waits and inefficient yard movement lead to wasted time and unnecessary emissions.
The industry has made real progress in transportation visibility. The next step is making that data more operational. The companies that get this right are the ones that tie transportation updates directly to what happens on the ground (at the gate, in the yard and at the dock) so teams can act on changes as they happen instead of chasing them after the fact.
