Supermarket retailer to implement supply chain execution solution, indicates plans for radio frequency identification

Atlanta — July 28, 2003 — Manhattan Associates Inc., a supply chain execution (SCE) solutions provider, today announced that Giant Eagle Inc., a Pittsburgh-based supermarket retailer with 214 stores in four states, plans to install Manhattan Associates' suite of SCE solutions.

Manhattan Associate's Warehouse Management System (WMS) and Trading Partner Management (TPM) system, combined with its business intelligence, slotting optimization and labor management tools, will be implemented for Giant Eagle to streamline its distribution processes.

In addition to Giant Eagle's focus of remaining an industry leader with innovation, the company said it decided to partner with Manhattan Associates as a result of its commitment to Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Giant Eagle intends to utilize RFID technology to reach greater operational efficiency both internally within its five distribution centers as well as across the broader supply chain.

Larry Baldauf, Giant Eagle senior vice president of Distribution, said, "The SCE software will help us achieve three major objectives: more efficiently meet our customer's needs and demands, reduce inventory levels across the supply chain and improve communications with our supplier base. In addition, we are very impressed with Manhattan Associates' early commitment to RFID, a key driver to achieving even greater levels of supply chain efficiency and productivity."

Giant Eagle said the SCE technology would eventually be deployed at the five Giant Eagle distribution centers (DCs), with the first site scheduled to go live in the second quarter of 2004. These centers, which range in size from 75,000 square feet to more than one million square feet, consist of Health, Beauty & Cosmetics; Meat; Frozen Products; and two Dry/Perishable facilities.
