ARMONK, N.Y.—June 7, 2011—The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) has named IBM) the first recipient of the 2011 ISM Awards for Excellence in Supply Management, Sustainability category.

With the establishment of its first formal environmental policy in 1971, IBM has refined the procurement and Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) organization into a centralized, unified environmentally sound team. This comprehensive transformation has not only allowed IBM to remain a leader in supply chain management but a leader in environmental stewardship in supply chain operations.

ISM honored IBM during the 96th Annual International Supply Management Conference and Educational Exhibit in Orlando, Fla. IBM Vice President of Business Integration & Strategy, Mike Ray, IBM Project Executive of Environmental Compliance & Supply Chain Social Responsibility, Louis Ferretti, and IBM Vice President of Global Technology Services, Catherine Rodgers, accepted the award on behalf of IBM.

IBM expects its suppliers to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. The company requires suppliers to define, deploy, and sustain a management system that addresses corporate responsibility; measure performance, and establish voluntary, quantifiable environmental goals; publicly disclose results associated with these voluntary environmental goals and other environmental aspects of their management systems.

As a result, more than 28,000 suppliers in nearly 90 countries are following social responsibility requirements in order to do business with IBM. To confirm adherence of its Supplier Conduct Principles, IBM performs hundreds of audits annually. Since 2004, more than 900 supplier audits based on IBM's Supplier Conduct Principles have been conducted by third-party firms with local personnel in 18 growth market countries.
