The Customer As Soldier

SAP helps the Army source for a truly demanding customer

Washington July 11, 2001 SAP Public Services Inc. and the U.S. Army TACOM Armament Research, Development & Engineering Center (TACOM-ARDEC) yesterday announced the deployment of SAP procurement, portal and enterprise software solutions. The SAP e-business solutions are part of the strategic effort by TACOM-ARDEC, based at the Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, to enhance support to mission programs and increase overall responsiveness to customer needs in a timelier manner.

TACOM-ARDEC is the first SAP Public Services customer to implement the mySAP Enterprise Collaboration Portal, which provides users with a single point of access to critical information. The enterprise portal solution replaces aging and internally developed applications.

The initiative advances TACOM-ARDEC in a new direction as the organization moves toward a totally integrated data environment that will provide all necessary information to employees and customers. SAP solutions enable TACOM-ARDEC to look across the entire enterprise, giving the organization the ability to adapt and quickly fulfill the vision of the Army.

"We will need this new environment when we look down the road and address our ability to perform at high levels as a smaller, leaner Army," said George Albinson, enterprise resource planning (ERP) program manager, U.S. Army, TACOM-ARDEC, of Picatinny Arsenal. "We will need to perform smarter, better, and cheaper, while supporting all our customers, including the ultimate customer the soldier. We are positioned to do this with SAP solutions."

As SAP Public Services' first customer using the enterprise portal solution, TACOM-ARDEC participated in the development of the portal solution for the government sector and became a key player in a strategic alliance to advance and develop SAP solutions. A formal public/private partnership agreement was signed between TACOM-ARDEC's Commanding General, Brigadier General Mike Lenaers and Tom Shirk, president of SAP Public Services.

"TACOM-ARDEC is an SAP strategic partner that has assisted us in perfecting Department of Defense solutions," said Shirk. "The results have been obvious to both SAP and TACOM-ARDEC: this solution showcases what leading organizations can accomplish when they form these unique public-private partnerships."

TACOM-ARDEC is a Department of the Army organization that provides the U.S. military with the firepower necessary to achieve decisive battlefield victory. Over 1,200 users interact cross nine different roles established and maintained within the mySAP Enterprise Collaboration Portal.
