Joe Phelan to head Swissport Cargo in the Americas

Joe Phelan will assume his duties effective immediately, bringing more than 25 years of international logistics and transport industry experience to the role.

Zurich, 3rd January 2012 – Swissport International has appointed Joe Phelan as its new Senior Vice President Cargo for the Americas. He will assume his duties effective immediately, bringing more than 25 years of international logistics and transport industry experience to the role.

Joe Phelan spent 25 years with American Airlines in various capacities, including Vice President for Cargo Operations, and Managing Director of Customer Service Europe.  In these roles he was responsible, respectively, for global cargo operations, and for passenger, ramp, security, customer service and cabin service operations for 10 countries in Europe.  While with American Airlines, Phelan served on the Gore Commission’s National Security Cargo Council for improved cargo security.  He was instrumental in the complete reengineering of AA’s cargo operations.

Phelan was recruited by Deutsche Post DHL Global Mail from American Airlines as Senior Vice President of Marketing and quickly rose to the ranks of Chief Operating Officer, and eventually CEO, where he significantly grew its mail products, customer relationships, market share and revenue. While with DHL Global Mail, Phelan served on the Department of State International Postal and Delivery Services committee.
