International Paper Smart Packaging partners with AWID, Psion Teklogix on solution targeted at CPG companies
Memphis, TN — October 4, 2005 — International Paper's Smart Packaging (IPSP) business has partnered with AWID and Psion Teklogix to offer a radio frequency identification-enabled Material Movement Truck Solution with REAL (Rugged, EPC Agile, Lift-truck) readers.
This solution, now commercially available, was initially designed to work in conjunction with the RFID Warehouse Tracking System that International Paper developed some three years ago to identify and locate paper rolls in its Texarkana, Texas, paper mill warehouse.
"This latest offering builds on our past success and positions us to meet our customer demands for a mobile RFID solution," said Scott Andersen, technical director for the Smart Packaging business. "In fact, this partnership with AWID and Psion Teklogix allows us to offer our respective customers across all industries the opportunity to achieve the most reliable product reads through our RFID-ready trucks."
According to International Paper, unlike other readers, the REAL Reader and the RFID-enabled Material Movement Solution can work in conjunction with multiple attachments and will enable trucks to read electronic product code (EPC) pallet tags and track every product movement in a warehouse. With the combined use of RFID and other proprietary technologies, the trucks can even monitor and report their own location and "health" status information in real-time through wireless messaging, International Paper said.
Jeff Jacobsen, president of AWID, said that the combined resources of International Paper Smart Packaging (IPSP), Psion Teklogix and AWID represent more than a mere RFID reader attached to a forklift truck. "CPG manufacturers and retailers can now install a flexible, mobile RFID system that can provide real-time inventory location down to plus or minus six inches," Jacobsen said.
AWID is an eight-year-old manufacturer of RFID readers and subsystems. AWID supplies EPC-certified Gen2 readers and reader modules, including a new family of ruggedized, water resistant, multi-port EPC readers for industrial applications. The company said it supplied approximately 70 percent of all the UHF reader modules sold worldwide in 2004.
Psion Teklogix is a provider of solutions for mobile computing and wireless data collection, including rugged hardware, wireless networks, software and professional services.
International Paper established its Smart Packaging business in 1999. Smart Packaging offers customers a suite of RFID/EPC-enabled products and services ranging from compliance solutions to warehousing and transportation tracking systems to the retail shelf.
