National postal service to install seven Multi-Sorter systems at operations in five cities under $20 million deal set for 2008 completion

Frederick, MD — November 28, 2005 — Norway Post has taped FKI Logistex to implement a material handling solution in its operations in Vestfold, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and Oslo in a project that is slated for completion in 2008.

Under the 17 million Euro ($20 million) deal, FKI Logistex will supply seven of its new Multi-Sorter systems, which, unlike other mail sortation solutions, allow for the simultaneous sorting of flats, letters, packages and irregular mail fed from a number of different induction sources. Other systems require multiple sorters to perform these separate tasks, according to FKI.

FKI Logistex begins the Norway Post project in Vestfold in early 2006. The project is scheduled for completion in mid-2008.

The Multi-Sorter design joins an electrically driven cross-belt sorter with high-capacity flat/letter feeders and automatic package/parcel induction units. The systems sort to totes, containers, unit load device (ULD) roller containers and bags, and they have a capacity of more than 14,400 items/hour, FKI said. The systems also can provide image capture and read barcode data.

FKI said that the Multi-Sorter design offers efficiencies to both small and large postal agencies and facilities. The systems can handle the high volumes of unusually shaped or sized mail (irregular mail) found in large facilities that can justify automation, while in smaller facilities, where mail volumes are limited, it is easier to cost-justify the investment in one Multi-Sorter as opposed to multiple conventional letter, flat or parcel sorters, according to the solution provider.

"FKI Logistex looks forward to working with Norway Post as the first postal service in the world to sign on to this innovative, cost-saving concept," says Henrik Mortensen, director for post and parcel at FKI Logistex Europe.
