Latest supply chain software includes beefed-up transportation planner, more industry best practices, RFID support

Las Vegas — October 10, 2003 — Software company Logility has released the latest version of its Voyager Solutions, which includes a beefed-up version of the provider's Transportation Planning Optimizer, additional baked-in industry best practices and support for radio frequency identification (RFID) technology at the carton, pallet and container level, among other features.

Logility says that Voyager Solutions 7.0 can help companies reduce supply chain costs, optimize inventory investments, increase sales and improve customer service through better demand management, optimized supply chain planning, synchronized production, streamlined warehouse and improved transportation management.

"Logility Voyager Solutions 7.0 are the answer for companies looking to gain market share or defend their competitive advantage through improved, Internet-managed supply chain activities," said Mike Edenfield, Logility's president and CEO.

Edenfield said that the solution can be integrated to existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) or legacy systems, as well as replace or interface to another demand management, supply chain planning, production scheduling, warehouse or transportation management solution. In addition, the solution components can be implemented jointly or separately.

"The entire Logility 7.0 solution is based on a completely integrated database architecture that facilitates the transfer of data between Logility products and other applications," Edenfield added.

The solution is designed to increase the visibility of supply chain initiatives through proactive monitoring and alert-based notification of key supply chain events, helping to improve an enterprise's ability to make the right strategic, tactical and operational decisions to boost profitability and improve customer service, Logility said.

Key features in 7.0 include what Logility is calling a "performance-driven view of the supply chain," functionality to help companies to gain global visibility into real-time operations and overall business strategy performance through an Internet portal that visually incorporates key performance indicators (KPIs) and that summarizes the current status of supply chain operations. This should help companies detect and respond to demand, supply, distribution and customer service needs in real-time via alert-based notification of key supply chain events.

The demand chain planning capabilities allow executives to define views of both single-enterprise and multiple-enterprise collaborative planning processes. Users can set up "personal views" across Logility planning engines to focus on key functions, products, markets and comparative forecasting techniques that leverage multiple sources of demand.

The extended supply chain planning optimization capabilities are intended to provide support for the optimization of supply, production and distribution networks to synchronize demand with supply and optimize constrained supply chain resources. New load optimization capabilities were designed to streamline inbound, transfer and vendor managed inventory (VMI) strategies such as building shipments, minimizing transportation costs, specifying distribution mode constraints and automatically releasing planned orders. Executives can extend supply, production and distribution analysis to include multiple simulations of supply chain network requirements for long-term planning and budgeting.

Global sourcing management functionality was designed to streamline and automate the strategic sourcing process, from proposal management and product specification package delivery to bid analysis and supplier performance management, through production management, quality monitoring, packaging and carton labeling, supplier shipment tracking and advance shipping notification, all with the goal of helping to reduce costs and accelerate time to market.

In addition, users can capitalize on Internet technology for real-time access to order and inventory status information. The Global Orders component provides visibility across the supply chain into order status for customers, suppliers, shippers and carriers, helping to enable advanced logistics strategies such as real-time merge-in-transit. Global Inventory provides real-time visibility of inventoried items across the supply chain, helping to enable optimized inventory investments and better customer service across complex multi-site global distribution centers.

An improved Transportation Planning Optimizer was designed to let users evaluate costs and equipment availability while considering multiple shipment strategies and transport modes for inbound and outbound planning. Logility says this provides additional flexibility to cost effectively match resources against customer needs and respond to dynamic market conditions.

Additional industry best practices were included to help increase warehouse productivity, according to the solution provider. Users can apply pre-packaged workflows as templates for additional industry best practices to increase warehouse productivity, improve customer service, enhance order visibility and accelerate deployment. For example, the recursive container workflow provides additional order visibility to track orders beyond the four walls of the warehouse down to a case on a pallet that has been loaded on a specific truck.

Version 7.0 also provides support for radio frequency identification (RFID) technology initially within the warehouse at the carton, pallet and container level to streamline the shipment of goods and accelerate the receipt of products into distribution centers.

Finally, Logility says that users can leverage an integrated database architecture to seamlessly share information between the solution provider's applications and other supply chain software systems. The architecture supports business process integration through supply chain event management and alert-based notification, and it enables users to track key performance indicators, according to Logility. The solution lets users leverage Web services using the Microsoft .NET platform to provide a common view across distributed systems, giving companies the ability to more easily view and assess the status of global inventory and global orders.
