Agreement expands both companies' manufacturing solutions
Alpharetta, GA — March 10, 2003 — Visiprise, the recognized leader in manufacturing execution systems, and EDS, the leading global services company, today announced an agreement to engage in cooperative product development, sales and support. As a first step, Visiprise SCE, a web-based collaborative manufacturing execution system, and EDS PLM
Solutions' ground-breaking Teamcenter manufacturing solution will be tightly integrated, providing a new level of connectivity across product design, manufacturing planning and shop floor execution.
This agreement addresses the manufacturing planning and execution needs of the discrete manufacturing companies in key industries including aerospace/defense, machinery, medical devices, and high tech industries. "We can now provide manufacturers a powerful combination of tools and services for creating, configuring and tracking a variety of manufacturing information within the context of the overall product lifecycle," said Sean McCloskey, CEO, Visiprise. "This relationship will provide our customers an integrated capability that will reduce new product introduction times, improve regulatory compliance and assist in achieving product and process quality improvement objectives."
Visiprise SCE's ability to deliver manufacturing plans and instructions to the shop floor can now be driven directly from the fully managed product and process information configured in EDS PLM's Teamcenter. This enables the value of product design data and manufacturing process definition to be utilized directly in shop floor manufacturing systems, maximizing data reuse and enhancing the propagation of engineering changes. The ability of the SCE product to collect detailed as-built information from the point of manufacture provides critical product and process data that can be fed back to the product design and manufacturing planning functions supported by Teamcenter.
"Incorporating these capabilities within the PLM framework means that our customers can take a consistent and accurate definition of the product from design requirements through to the point of manufacture," said Ted McFadden, Vice-President of Manufacturing Planning Solutions at EDS PLM Solutions. "It also enables effective change management in the context of evolving product and process configurations, and within a complex manufacturing environment. The combination of EDS's PLM Open architecture and the web-based J2EE platform of Visiprise's SCE product are key enablers in the integration and make deployment and extensibility predictable and straightforward."
Visiprise is the newly formed manufacturing solutions provider created from the merger of two industry leaders: Teradyne's Manufacturing Software Group and NetVendor, Inc. Visiprise combines the technologies of manufacturing execution, product data management, and business process management with enterprise integration strategies to deliver systems uniquely poised to take advantage of critical information gathered from the plant floor and across the enterprise. Visiprise supports customers in the electronics, aerospace, defense and automotive markets such as Celestica, Solectron, Raytheon, Sun, Compaq, Rolls-Royce, Philips Lighting, Textron, Teradyne TCS, and Kulicke & Soffa. Toronto — March 18, 2003 — CN and customs brokerage company Livingston International today announced the joint development of a new electronic link to increase the speed and accuracy of customs clearance processes for Canadian importers.
CN, in a transportation industry first, now sends manifest information to Livingston electronically instead of by fax. This eliminates the need for Livingston to key in faxed data into its computers.
Tom Ruth, Livingston's senior vice-president for Canadian and U.S. brokerage, said information such as an importer's name automatically triggers the transmission of the manifest directly from CN to one of 40 client service teams at Livingston. Upon further processing, complete information is sent electronically to Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) officials for a clearance decision.
CN has for years transmitted advance manifest information electronically to the CCRA, while the manifest delivery to brokers was through a fax process. The automation of this information delivery with Livingston completes the electronic customs cycle for rail shipments.
Ruth said: "This advance will speed the customs process and improve the accuracy of the data. It's a big step forward and we'd like to develop similar electronic links with other major surface carriers."
Anita Ernesaks, vice-president of e-Business at CN, said: "The new electronic manifest link between CN and Livingston will accelerate the customs clearance process and help our customers better manage their supply chain costs. It's also another example of ways in which CN is trying to make it easier for its customers to do business with the railway."
Livingston International Inc. is Canada's leading customs broker and trade services company facilitating trade between the United States and Canada. Based in Toronto, the company has more than 70 offices and approximately 1,650 employees located at key border points and other strategic locations across Canada and the United States.
Canadian National Railway Company spans Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico, serving the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, B.C., Montreal, Halifax, New Orleans, and Mobile, Ala., and the key cities of Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Duluth, Minn./Superior, Wisc., Green Bay, Wisc., Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, St. Louis, and Jackson, Miss., with connections to all points in North America. www.cn.ca
SAP Announces Strategic Development Project with Europe's Largest Department Store and Mail Order Group
Hanover, Germany — March 13, 2003 — SAP AG today announced the development of innovative planning and execution capabilities for its industry-leading solution for the retail industry — mySAP Retail — in a strategic collaboration with KarstadtQuelle AG (KarstadtQuelle), Europe's largest combined department store and mail order group. The SAP / KarstadtQuelle project to develop new functionality for fashion retailers' procurement processes and to create new processes for forecast and replenishment at warehouses and retail outlets will create the most comprehensive solution for fashion retailers on the market.
KarstadtQuelle will gain a superior solution enabling the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating market demands and the ability to better seize business opportunities. SAP will further extend its expertise and capability in the market by adding fashion specific features for the final link in a highly complex supply chain: fashion retailers. KarstadtQuelle aims to roll out the enhanced solution in 2004. The new capabilities of mySAP Retail are expected to be available for customers on a global basis in 2005.
Compared with food and consumer goods retailers, fashion retailers face unique business challenges. Planning not only involves anticipating market demand for each fashion article, but also demand for the particular sizes, colors, and styles of each article (or stock keeping unit, SKU). Additionally, most SKUs are valid for only one fashion season. With the co-developed planning and execution capability for mySAP Retail, KarstadtQuelle will gain a better overview of six million SKUs delivered from around the world to more than 40,000 departments of KarstadtQuelle's 200 European department stores.
"We went with SAP because of their superior technology and their ability to integrate business processes as well as front- and back-office systems," said Prof. Dr. Helmut Merkel, executive board member of KarstadtQuelle AG. "Running our business processes on SAP's software platform will help us maintain and expand our competitive advantage for the long term."
With the key functionalities of merchandise planning, merchandise distribution, and Open-to-Buy (OTB) procurement, new capabilities in mySAP Retail will integrate inventory and financial data, provide a detailed overview of inventory and demand, and enable top-down as well as bottom-up collaborative planning and execution. The tightly knit integration of strategic planning and execution will reduce costs by streamlining ordering, warehousing, and distribution processes.
Merchandise planning enables top-down planning and execution, providing users with a comprehensive analysis of what articles sell well at which retail outlets, so that these can be distributed accordingly. SAP and KarstadtQuelle will introduce capacity planning, a new capability allowing users to factor in their planning the shelf space in retail outlets that can be allotted to a certain product. Only the amount of items for which there is capacity will then be planned for and ordered.
The open-to-buy (OTB) tool with mySAP Retail will help buyers plan and monitor their purchasing budgets. OTB enables flexible planning by regularly updating data on sales volumes, purchase orders, and goods receipts. With OTB, buyers will be able to see how much of their budget has already been spent and how much remains available, and receive automatic warnings when in danger of exceeding budgets. The tool will ensure that data is consistent at all levels of an organization and also compare actual conditions to original planning.
Merchandise distribution capabilities with mySAP Retail will help users reduce stock and markdowns, and better plan, control, and manage the flow of merchandise from the vendor to the distribution center and then on to the store or customer. Merchandise distribution supports push and pull processes, and allows cross-docking-the movement of merchandise directly through the distribution center without putting it in storage, thus reducing operating costs and inventory levels, and increasing throughput.
"SAP has more than 30 years experience fulfilling the industry-specific demands of the world's leading businesses, and we are committed to working with our customers to develop even more functionality to meet their needs," said Henning Kagermann, co-chairman and CEO of SAP AG. "We are pleased to be working closely with Europe's leading retailer to help streamline business processes for fashion retailers. With the planning and execution capability of mySAP Retail, SAP and KarstadtQuelle are creating an integrative, standardized solution for fashion retailers."
