Office Depot Debuts Latest Catalog Offering Products for a Greener Office
Fourth edition of catalog of environmentally preferable products includes nearly 3,000 items, updated green office tips and guidance on green office purchasing

Delray Beach, FL — December 3, 2007 — Office products retailer Office Depot is launching its fourth Green Book, a catalog offering nearly 3,000 products featuring a range of environmental attributes and intended to provide businesses with a variety of relevant products as well as guidance on creating an "environmentally preferable" office.

"Year-over-year we are seeing a significant increase in the number of customers wanting to 'green' their purchasing practices," said Steve Schmidt, president of Office Depot's North American Business Solutions Division. "Office Depot's Green Book provides these businesses with a unique solution, complete with product recommendations and consultative guidance, to achieve their goals."

"Creating a greener office is becoming increasingly attainable for today's business professionals," said Yalmaz Siddiqui, environmental strategy advisor for Office Depot. "Office Depot's Green Book contains thousands of high quality, competitively priced products and helpful tips to help companies lower the total cost of office operations while reducing waste, using less energy and limiting their exposure to toxins in the office."

The Green Bandwagon

"Green" is new the new black for the office products industry. In addition to Office Depot's efforts, Staples has undertaken significant environmental initiatives, too, including offering more "Earth-friendly" products and "greening" its own facilities and supply chain. (Read more about Staples' efforts in the cover story to the current issue of Supply & Demand Chain Executive.)

Features of Office Depot's Green Book include more than 2,200 recycled or remanufactured products and 600 items with environmental benefits other than recycled, such as reduced energy, non-toxic, refillable and rechargeable. The latest book offers 500 new environmentally preferable products ranging from Green Guard certified furniture and Green Seal certified cleaning supplies with reduced chemicals to solar charging business cases.

The retailer also provides explanations on what constitutes a greener office (e.g., Green Guard Furniture, Energy Star-rated lights and technology, recycled paper and remanufactured ink and toner cartridges), as well as check lists and self-assessment guides to help businesses better gauge their green rating (e.g., what office products are you currently recycling?; do you print on both sides of the page?; do you recycle your old ink and toner cartridges and purchase remanufactured ones?).

The book includes a listing of the greenest office products rated by their environmental attribute (e.g., recycled, Energy Star-rated, low toxic, refillable, rechargeable, etc.), in addition to tips and solutions for a greener work life (i.e., recycle e-waste, use by sides of the paper when printing; purchase a reusable mug).
