Union Pacific, Dow Plan Chemical Safety Tour
Allies look to raise awareness of chemical transportation security, provide preparedness training to emergency response organization under TRANSCAER program

New York — July 25, 2007 — Union Pacific Railroad and The Dow Chemical Company are set to present a series of regional training tours to bring community awareness and emergency preparedness training to local and regional emergency response organizations about safety and security issues surrounding the rail transportation of chemical materials.

The TRANSCAER Training Tour is slated to visit six California cities from late August through mid-September and nine cities in Texas and the Gulf Coast region in October and November.

TRANSCAER, or Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response, is a voluntary national outreach effort that focuses on assisting communities to prepare for, and respond to, a possible hazardous material transportation incident.

Improving the Chemical Supply Chain

The tour aims to educate community leaders near major rail routes about rail equipment, chemical transportation and the importance of planning for potential hazardous material transportation emergencies. The one-day training is designed to meet the information and training needs of various stakeholder groups, offering general awareness training, railroad and hazmat training and advance material handling training with hands-on exercises.

Union Pacific and Dow said that these tours are part of their long-term commitment to provide improved community awareness and emergency response preparedness along chemical transportation routes, in coordination with national, regional and state TRANSCAER programs.

In March Union Pacific and Dow announced a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) reinforcing the companies' history of working together to improve safety and security in chemical transportation. The TRANSCAER tour is one component of that MOC.
