Staples Recognized for Green Supply Chain Initiatives
Distribution Business Management Association confers award for excellence in energy efficiency and cost reduction across the supply chain

Lancaster, PA — June 15, 2007 — Office supplies giant Staples has received the prestigious 2007 Circle of Excellence Award, conferred by the Distribution Business Management (DBM) Association Board of Universities, for excellence in energy efficiency and cost reduction across its supply chain.

Mark Buckley, Staples' vice president of environmental affairs, and Donald Ralph, senior vice president of logistics at the company, will accept the award on Staples' behalf at an awards ceremony at the Omni Hotel in Champions Gate, Fla., on June 12.

Referred to as the "good guy" award by The Wall Street Journal, the DBM Association presents the award each year to one company that represents excellence and a strong commitment to the environment in their particular industry.

Pursuing Environmental Stewardship

The award recipient is chosen by an international panel of judges from the top universities and must meet the following criteria: formal corporate commitment to environmentally responsible programs; demonstration of past and present program results; and plans for continuation of the commitment.

"The DBM Association is proud to honor Staples for their environmental policies and practices with the 2007 Circle of Excellence Award," said Amy Thorn, executive director at the association. "Staples shows a clear commitment not only to its customers but to our environment locally, nationally and globally. By its actions Staples has set a good example of environmental stewardship for corporations worldwide."

The criteria for the Circle of Excellence Award were developed by Omar Keith Helferich based on research accomplished through Michigan State University and Central Michigan University with assistance from DBM and other leading universities involved with supply chain management. Recent past recipients have included CVS/pharmacy, Dell, UPS, Kraft, Lockheed Martin, Molson Coors and Circuit City.

Four Cornerstones for the Green Supply Chain

Staples' environmental initiatives revolve around four cornerstones: offering an assortment of eco-friendly products, making it easy for customers to recycle, investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy, and educating customers and associates about how they can make a difference. The company currently offers more than 2,900 different products that incorporate recycled content, many of which are Staples brand products.
