Suffolk Cold Storage Streamlines Operations with Cloud Technologies

East Coast 3PL leverages HighJump Software WMS and EDI solutions

Eden Prairie, MN—Jan. 4, 2012—Suffolk Cold Storage has streamlined its operations with cloud solutions from HighJump Software.

Based in Suffolk, Va., Suffolk Cold Storage is a regional third-party logistics (3PL) company specializing in temperature-controlled storage and distribution for fresh and frozen meat and seafood products. As a division of Wanchese Fish Co., Suffolk handles 13 million cases (260 million pounds) of perishable food products annually.

“A cloud-based system enabled us to focus entirely on business operations rather than back office systems—this resulted in a near total reduction of expensive IT staff,” said Jim Stoddard, general manager at Suffolk Cold Storage. “Now, we only have one system administrator to oversee operation and maintenance.”

The new HighJump WMS and HighJump EDI systems have driven overall productivity for the company. Over the course of its first year using the HighJump WMS, Suffolk reduced its overall staff head count by 22 percent. Also, because the system is easy to use and has nearly 100 percent up time, Suffolk employees spend very little time actually thinking about the systems that are in place, they just use them. Productivity has increased 40 percent and the company is expecting an 80 percent reduction in lost or misplaced product.

All EDI transactions are processed by the new TrueCommerce EDI solution—nearly 20,000 transactions each month. In addition, cold storage facilities that house and distribute food and beverage products must comply with a number of strict FDA regulations for tracking and reporting, so the EDI and WMS systems must work seamlessly to provide on-demand reports and visibility across the entire business.
