Delivery service eyes improved on-times, reduced costs using Symbol devices to track packages
Holtsville, NY — July 24, 2006 — California priority delivery service Golden State Overnight (GSO) has deployed more than 800 mobile computers from Symbol to manage and track the pickup and delivery of the 8 million packages it processes each year, the solution provider has announced.
GSO is using the Symbol MC9060 rugged mobile computer to support its core business operations in an effort to increase revenue and improve operational efficiencies and customer satisfaction through more efficient delivery processes.
"We selected the Symbol MC9060 mobile computer to improve the speed and accuracy of our delivery process," said Allan Chandler, director of technology at Golden State. "In order to remain competitive in this fast-paced industry, we need to offer later pickups, earlier deliveries and on-time delivery. Symbol's rugged mobile computers help us provide these services to our customers every day."
Creative Concepts Software Inc., a Symbol business partner, provides Golden State with staging, configuration and support services on the MC9060 mobile computers that are used throughout GSO's 24 distribution centers and 1,000 trucks, helping to guarantee priority overnight delivery throughout California as well as to major metropolitan areas in Nevada and Arizona.
Since deploying the Symbol mobile computers, GSO has reduced the time needed to load packages into trucks each morning by more than 75 percent, from over 45 minutes to just 10 minutes. These operational improvements have enabled GSO to increase revenue by delivering more packages on time each day.

Golden State Overnight selected the Symbol MC9060 mobile computer for real-time communication and continuous access to data across their service region. The MC9060, with wireless [local area network (LAN)] communications used at the distribution centers and wireless [wide area network (WAN)] voice and data capabilities for communications on the road, helps improve productivity and decrease workflow complexity throughout GSO's business operations, Symbol said.
