Downloadable primer gives buying, engineering communities updated info on EU's upcoming environmental directives

Chicago June 13, 2005 Electronic components distributor Newark InOne is offering a downloadable manual intended to provide the buying and engineering communities with a continuously updated source of information and news relating to the upcoming European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives.

RoHS, which comes into force in July 2006, restricts the use of certain materials (lead, cadmium and mercury, among others) in electrical and electronic equipment.

The 22-page RoHS Legislation and Technical Manual, posted on Newark's RoHS Express Web site at www.newarkinone.com/rohs, contains an introduction to RoHS, a Step by Step Guide to Compliance, information about the substances affected, a chapter on soldering and a closing environmental section.

The RoHS Express area also offers visitors the opportunity to register to receive free monthly RoHS email updates highlighting the latest news and new compliant products.

"We understand the frustrations experienced by our customers as they face the challenge of achieving compliance with RoHS, and we're committed to simplifying the process for them," said Jeff Shafer, senior vice president of product for Newark. "The RoHS Legislation and Technical Manual, and the other rich content on our RoHS Express site, is intended to help our customers find answers to their most commonly asked questions."

The RoHS Legislation and Technical Manual, first published by Newark InOne's sister distributor Farnell InOne in the United Kingdom, can also be accessed at www.rohs.info.
