London — March 27, — UPM, one of the world's largest producers of printing papers, said it is using solutions from i2 Technologies Inc. to achieve its goal of a fully integrated global supply chain.

UPM has already implemented i2 Demand Planner, Demand Fulfillment and Supply Chain Planner at its paper mills and sales locations. Part of the i2 supply chain management (SCM) suite of products, UPM said the solutions have enabled it to plan demand forecast, high-level capacity and order allocation on a global basis for the first time.

UPM reported that it can plan sales forecasts and capacity globally, be a more reliable supplier to strategic customers because of its ability to allocate and promise capacity during periods of constrained supply, operate global processes, and reduce operating costs.

UPM said it is now rolling out i2 Transportation Bid Collaboration and i2 Supply Chain Strategist solutions, which are designed to enable companies to model the complexities and interdependencies of the value chain in collaboration with both users and service providers. The company has begun the implementation with a goal of optimizing its logistics planning across nearly 100 distribution and logistics nodes worldwide.

"It is our goal to achieve a global view of our supply chain, reduce the cost of working capital on finished goods stocks and better allocate orders to maximize enterprise value," said Ilkka Heikola, vice president, Business Planning and Processes at UPM. "In addition, we are increasing efficiency through the creation of a structured global logistics and transportation network and by reducing costs resulting from overbooking. With the first phase of the i2 implementation complete and the second phase underway, we are on track to achieve these goals."
