Taps Exel for integrated, transparent supply chain

Columbus, OH — July, 26 2004 — Supply chain management provider Exel today announced it has been appointed International Lead Logistics Provider (ILLP) for DaimlerChrysler, one of the world's leading automotive manufacturers.

Exel's role as ILLP encompasses supply chain management from non-North American Free Trade Association (NAFTA) countries into DaimlerChrysler's North American plants and its aftermarket MOPAR locations. Key areas of focus for the ILLP program include international transportation, supplier communications and training, and management services.

"An integrated and transparent supply chain is an integral part of DaimlerChrysler's commitment to serving its customers," said William Cook, senior manager, International Customs and Supply, DaimlerChrysler. "With Exel as our single point of contact, we can more effectively control the flow of materials from our international supply base and better control the associated supply chain costs."

Through the integration of Exel's information technology software and DaimlerChrysler's in-house STARS system, the automotive manufacturer said it will have full visibility of milestone events throughout its supply chain. Exel has set up control towers in Veghel, The Netherlands, and Taylor, Mich., to manage all functions and activities required by the ILLP program. This includes controlling the international flow of DaimlerChrysler materials and information, and ensuring supplier conformance to DaimlerChrysler company standards.

"After reviewing DaimlerChrysler's existing operations, we realized that value could be generated by integrating the supply chain functions within the Logistics and Production Material Control divisions," said Tom Ross, Exel's customer development manager. "Because of our experience serving DaimlerChrysler domestically, we were able to tailor an effective global solution that capitalizes upon the resources of our worldwide material control and consolidation facilities."

Exel and DaimlerChrysler have been working together since 1979. Exel currently provides the following services for DaimlerChrysler: route planning and operation, parts sequencing, dedicated delivery, inbound and outbound shipment management, transportation management, and information management for reverse logistics.
