Holland, MI — October 7, 2004 — The North American food division of multinational consumer packaged goods (CPG) giant Unilever is set to deploy a Web-based transportation management system (TMS) from LeanLogistics as part of an initiative to meet increasing customer requirements, as well as internal transportation service requirements.

Unilever Foods North America, manufacturer of such well-known brands as Lipton, Hellmann's and Ragu, will use LeanLogistic's Web-native On-Demand TMS to support its transportation services department's long-term continuous improvement goals for delivery performance and transportation management processes.

"Our review of potential vendors determined that the LeanLogistics TMS' functional and technical solutions were the best available to meet our aggressive service requirements," said Mike Raehl, director of transportation services at Unilever Foods North America.

Unilever's transportation initiatives include shifting from transactional event management to delivery performance improvement using LeanLogistics' On-Demand TMS with its proactive exception-based management tools. LeanLogistics will integrate with SAP for order feed data and electronic data interchange (EDI), helping to improve visibility from order creation through final delivery.

Raehl said that the integration of LeanLogistics' TMS technology with Unilever would provide opportunities that previously have not been easily accessible. "It will enable our people and processes to improve customer on-time delivery performance to appointment time and to requested arrival date, as well as enhance freight carrier communications," Raehl said.

LeanLogistics will focus on core transportation planning, execution and visibility functionalities, including on-line appointment scheduling and messaging capabilities that will allow carriers to procure shipping appointments, facilities to establish loading and unloading rules and times, and managers to define dock configurations, schedules and restrictions. According to LeanLogistics, its WebSettle solution will provide pre-payment audit and freight payment capabilities to eliminate costly errors and losses.

"Unilever has chosen to migrate from [its] existing in-house TMS system to our On-Demand TMS model because they realize the technology's high benefits, quick implementation, and low risk," said Dan Dershem, president of LeanLogistics. "LeanLogistics' ability to improve performance meets with Unilever's overall strategic plan to accelerate top-line sales growth and improve services with customers."
