Bar code libraries, SAP SmartForms provide label design and printing solution without expense of middleware
Vernon Hills, IL — October 8, 2004 — Printing solutions provider Zebra Technologies has concluded an agreement with German enterprise software giant SAP under which SAP has embedded Zebra's bar code rendering libraries into SAP SmartForms graphical forms and the report design tool in the mySAP Business Suite family of solutions.
Zebra said the agreement will provide users an easy way to generate bar codes on-demand for asset tracking, compliance labeling, document tracking and other business productivity improvements without using middleware. At the same time, SAP has created its first native bar code printer driver, which uses Zebra programming language (ZPL) to drive Zebra-brand dedicated thermal label printers.
SAP chose Zebra to assist in developing this native bar code functionality in its SmartForms application in response to customer demand, according to Zebra, since many SAP customers now are incorporating bar code identification and data collection into their supply chain processes.
With the addition of Zebra's bar code rendering technology and SAP's new native ZPL bar code printer driver, SAP SmartForms capabilities now encompass bar code label design and native thermal bar code label printing, and the solution enable users of mySAP Business Suite to incorporate bar code label design and printing capabilities into their forms management portfolio, Zebra said.
"Bar code printing will now become an integral and standardized part of SAP's value proposition, giving users of solutions from SAP and Zebra a comprehensive and easy-to-use forms, reports and label design tool with a simple migration path and no added expense," said Stuart Itkin, vice president of marketing for Zebra Technologies.
