Chooses Alien Technology tags and readers in multi-year agreement to meet retailers' mandates

Morgan Hill, CA — October 27, 2004 — Apparel producer VF Corporation, looking to spruce up its supply chain with radio frequency identification (RFID), has signed a multi-year agreement with Alien Technology to purchase RFID tags and readers.

Headquartered in Greensboro, N.C, VF offers a variety of apparel under a host of different brand names, including Lee, JanSport, Eastpak and The North Face. The company had sales of $5.2 billion in its most recent fiscal year.

VF will use these EPC Class 1 tags and readers from Alien to tag cases and pallets destined for Wal-Mart and other retailers requiring RFID tags. The company plans to roll out the technology in January.

"Alien tags and readers offer the best long-term approach to VF Corporation for RFID compliance," said Eric Anthony, vice president of information technology services at VF. "Alien's ability to ensure capacity and to coordinate the future upgrade to Class 1 Gen 2 helps us manage risk in implementing this mandate. Alien's Class 1 system performed well in our tests, ensuring a smooth roll-out in January."

Stav Prodromou, CEO of Alien, said: "By choosing EPC Class 1, VF has chosen the best course for compliance and ultimately to a strong ROI. This decision demonstrates that VF's industry leadership stems not only from successful brand building, but also sound operational policy."

Alien provides RFID products to customers in government, retail, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, transportation and other industries.
