Retailer implements warehouse management, labor standards software to improve fulfillment operation

Dulles, VA September 2, 2003 MARC Global, a supply chain execution software and services provider, has implemented its MARC product suite, including its warehouse management system and labor standards module, at Norm Thompson Outfitters' 250,000-square-foot central distribution center in Kearneysville, W.V.

Norm Thompson, a leading consumer specialty retailer, went live operating at full production capacity on July 14. According to MARC, the retailer chose the provider's warehouse management solution to replace its homegrown system because of MARC's highly user-configurable interface, functionality and built-in tools for automating distribution processes and managing complex business processes.

Norm Thompson also selected the MARC-Labor Standards module to provide detailed labor planning and productivity reporting. The MARC system is expected to drive improvements in Norm Thompson's fulfillment operation, enabling the company to achieve higher levels of customer satisfaction.

The Kearneysville, W.V., distribution center stores products for the company's Norm Thompson, Solutions, Early Winters and Waterfront Living catalogs, which feature private-label and brand-name apparel, footwear and accessories for men and women. The company also offers luggage, gifts, home accents, specialty foods and flowers. These products can be purchased through Norm Thompson's Web site, by mail and in retail stores.

"With the expertise of the MARC Global implementation team, we were able to successfully convert to MARC over a weekend and have been up and running smoothly ever since," said Matt Abraham, vice president of information technology for Norm Thompson. "We far exceeded our expectations for outbound volume in just the first week the system was operational. We also realized a major benefit by using MARC's iSPM workflow technology to standardize and electronically execute processes and procedures that were not previously automated, including our rigorous quality control process."

MARC says its Intelligent Script Process Management (iSPM) technology allows users to design end-to-end business processes without writing code, thereby saving customers expensive software customization costs. With iSPM, users compose and execute a dynamic sequence of step-by-step instructions to manage business processes. This technology was key in enabling Norm Thompson to guarantee more standardized processes and to reduce the overall learning curve for new employees, according to the solution provider.

"During the peak seasons, a large part of Norm Thompson's staff is temporary help hired to meet increased demand," said Don DeCaro, executive director of implementation services for MARC Global. "The MARC functionality, specifically iSPM, reduces the overall learning curve for new employees and ensures that the workforce will be productive in a short amount of time."
